Emmaus

A reflection on the “Road to Emmaus”:

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

How many of the stories selected by the editors of Matthew, Mark (Peter’s influence), Luke (influenced by apostolic sources), and John had their selections influenced by what Jesus’ told the disciples in the 40 days after his Ascension?

Matthew’s gospel, as just one example, frequently points out prophecies Jesus fulfilled.

From

After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from every nation and tribe and people and language, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands. (Revelation 7:9)

  • “crowd”: ὄχλος, “ochlos,” crowd, multitude, “large crowds followed Him” = a group of people

  • “from”: It’s not the peoples before the throne, but people from the peoples. No group is left out—no racism—but it’s not enough to get some from every group, rather “too many to number” from all the groups with none excluded.

Perhaps only two numbers with respect to any given people group really matter: is % Christian above zero (this group is not left out), and how far from 100% is the group?
