I have noticed the best test for whether, and (more importantly) why, we follow God can be found in our thought, feelings and actions after either
(1) he tells us to do what we don’t want to do, or not to do what we want to do
OR
(2) when he doesn’t do what we want him to.
If we obey when our wills are crossed, it says something about our motivations.
Yet it says far more if we obey even in times of severe doubt, when we find ourselves uncertain of God’s existence.
I believe (and often think or feel) God loves me, and I therefore serve faithfully, with the sure and certain hope that he will care for my future. (“And now abides faith, hope, love… but the greatest of these is love.”)
