“Netflix kills plan to split off DVD rentals,” SFGate.com. Netflix has made some interesting moves lately. They are mostly interesting to missionaries through the lens of navigating deep change. This latest “reset” from Netflix–abandoning a proposed deep change when it was too deep a change for their constituency to navigate–reminds me of Seth Godin’s book, “The Dip.” In it, Godin discusses how to know when to quit. See here for more details.
“What really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.
“Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt-until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. If you can become number one in your niche, you’ll get more than your fair share of profits, glory, and long-term security.”
Have you ever been in the midst of a deep change, a reset, and come to the point of considering whether it was worth “pushing through” the dip or quitting? Comment below.
