“TomTom Finally Acknowledges It’s Getting Out Of Devices; Shareholders Rejoice,” Devin Coldewey, TechCrunch.
Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, TomTom and Garmin were the virtually exclusive makers and distributors of GPS devices. But then smartphones (particularly the iPhone and Android units) began providing GPS and map functions—and who needs to carry an extra GPS device when you’ve got one on your phone that works spectacularly well?
TomTom is finally doing some self-evaluation and preparing for deep change—or at least some costly adaptation. They’ve found a new niche—GPS in cheaper cars—and are hoping to ride another wave “while iOS and Android devour the old market.”
What is causing deep change for you? What are you doing about it?
