In a digital world, identity hacking is a greater threat than identity theft.

Take this case.

Twenty-year-old Guo describes herself as the commercial manager of the Red Cross while posting pictures of her extravagant, rich lifestyle.

TIME puts her on the cover as a poster girl for the “murky world of Chinese philanthropy.”

Except that it turns out, she’s not attached to the Red Cross at all.

And, as it turns out, TIME never put her on the cover. Someone photoshopped it and posted it on the Internet.

But the Chinese Red Cross got audited anyway, and irregularities were discovered.

In a digital world, it’s easy to put anyone in a compromising position.

Identity theft will be less a challenge than identity hacking.

The best defense–is an excellent reputation and a transparent life.
