Independence is a very American trait–but it is not necessarily a Godly one. God calls us to be interdependent with others. He calls us to a life of service, of dependence, of humility. He says that we should “wash each others feet” and that “they will know we are his disciples by the love we have for each other.”
Often in the pursuit of our vision we would prefer to be an American icon–like the “Lone Ranger” (a cowboy with one faithful friend who rights wrongs), or “Superman” (who doesn’t need anyone else, as he is impervious to pain and more powerful than anyone), or perhaps even “Batman” (a lone vigilante inhabiting the shadows dealing justice to criminals). But these are not the ideals of Christ.
Who are you dependent on? Who is dependent on you? Who are you serving?
