When you have strategic differences in a swarm

June 10, 2011

Newt Acknowledges ‘Strategic Differences’ Between Him and Departed campaign staff: ABC News is running an article on the recent resignation/firing of the top campaign staff of Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign.

I am not into presidential politics. This event merely illustrates the importance of sharing both the “plausible promise” (e.g. “Elect _x_ for President”) and the “shared values” (the distinctives of how a swarm achieves its promise–what’s important to the swarm).

Shared values are not just ethical statements. They are the things that you emphasize that determine what behaviors and strategies you will implement. In a political campaign, it might be whether you court lots of small donations or a few big donations. In an evangelistic swarm, it might be whether you primarily interact with people via Internet evangelism or whether you do door to door literature distribution, for example.

If you agree on a plausible promise but not values, you need an alliance, not a swarm. If you agree on values but not a plausible promise, you need to learn from each other but not try to collaborate.

Only be in the same swarm when both promise & values are agreed.
