Seth Godin writes today about how to know when enough is enough. This can apply to missionary work, too. In CPM circles there is a common acronym: MAWL (Model, Assist, Watch, Leave). There are different theories about how to accomplish this (especially for those who don’t want to leave relationships, etc). But the idea is that you’re not there, forever, leading a church – you intentionally build a ministry which can function without you, which is oriented toward multiplication–a ministry that builds ministries.
My model is: 1 team that raises up 100 local ministries which each reach 1,000 people over 10 years. None of these ministries will ever be “perfect”–but will they be sustainable, resilient, and able to reach their goal? If so, it’s probably “good enough.” People are broken and need to learn to rely upon the Lord for joy, strength in their weakness, and the resources to accomplish all He has for them–not on you.
