Radio Free Europe has an article up analyzing polygamy in Kazakhstan: illegal, but a fact of life. It’s an interesting article with implications for the church, because the Bible specifies that elders of the church are to be husbands of one wife. One thorny question that develops: when a non-Christian who is a polygamist comes to Christ, what does he do about multiple wives? Different people will have different answers.
I did find one comment in this article especially insightful: “Shynarapai says she prefers men who are openly polygamous to those who have affairs and lie about them.” It has been said that the West is not polygamous–but it does practice serial monogamy. I personally don’t think polygamy is God’s ideal for man–but we should probably be slow to cast the first stone.
