Busy and Productive

June 29, 2011

There is a difference between being busy and lazy, as the famous fable of the far-thinking ant and the shortsighted and apathetic grasshopper tells us. However, there is equally a difference between being busy and productive.

To be busy can mean to be industrious—but it can also mean to simply be active at every moment. Is our schedule full? Is our day-timer maxed out? Are we busy, busy, busy running here and there? Do we judge how valuable we are by how busy we are, and even perhaps how difficult it is to get on our schedule?

To be productive, on the other hand, isn’t about the activity. It’s about the vision. Business is a measure of the quantity of our available daily time; productivity is a measure of what we produce of value.

Jesus never endorsed laziness. On the other hand, Martha was busy—and Mary was productive.
