A different sort of assassination: of character

June 23, 2011

Slashdot has up a story, Fired IT Worker Replaces CEO’s Presentation With Porn. This represents a different sort of crime, and one that could potentially affect missionaries in some situations: where the criminal is attacking the perception of a person’s character. Such an attack could have vastly greater impact than killing a missionary or tempting him to sin. It can destroy a missionary’s reputation and effectiveness without ever having to pay the cost of assassination or temptation.

I’m sure this has happened in some places, but it’s difficult to tell whether it has or not in many cases because someone could claim “I was framed” and you wouldn’t know whether to believe them or not. The primary defense against this: a reputation for being a disciple of Christ (that makes such a catastrophic sin hard to believe), a strong relationship with an accountability group (who can vouch for the person), and good cybersecurity (to make this kind of attack difficult).
