What’s missing from Cohn & Moran’s list of good leadership attributes?

May 26, 2011

Earlier today I picked a little on this McKnight’s marks of good discipleship. Now I get to pick on a secular book: here’s a review of Cohn & Moran’s book, “Why are we bad at picking good leaders?” LeadershipNow.com has an review up, and reading it makes me want to pick the book itself up and read it eventually. Still, one thing struck me about the list of “seven basic building blocks of a leader.” The missing ingredient is the same ingredient missing from McKnight’s book: reproduceability.

Why don’t we look for reproduceability in our leaders? Some thoughts:

1. We don’t want them to reproduce themselves in us. We’re fine just like we are, thank you.
2. You’re supposed to do all that difficult leading work, not me.
3. So few leaders reproduce themselves: maybe that’s not really possible.
4. Our leaders are ruthless sinners and selfish creeps with no integrity whatsoever. Who wants them to reproduce?
5. I’d rather have an impressive show than quiet service. I want the credit for following someone spectacular.
6. I want someone who feels my pain, not someone who summons me to change.
7.  ?
