Waiting for perfection

May 16, 2011

Should we evangelize all of the lost people in America before we send American missionaries abroad? I’ve heard this argument a lot in the past; thankfully, less so now. (Possibly because a lot of unreached people are migrating to America.)

Jerry Rankin once wrote a passionate rant on the subject. His clincher: a church doesn’t grow with the intention of eventually being obedient to the Great Commission.

Read Acts 1:8, which talks about Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and the “ends of the earth”. The Scripture doesn’t say “or” or “then.”

We cannot wait to be perfect at home before we send out missionaries. We will always be in the grip of the “paralysis of perfection.” God pours his glory into broken, earthen vessels with the intent that they will leak and overflow.

We need to be less about making our jars of clay look better, and more about providing water for the thirsty!
