This week I am experimenting with a slightly new format for our Tuesday Trends. The experiment is this: I will cycle each quarter through 13 macrotrends, one each Tuesday. Each week on Tuesday I will present upwards of 20 or so small “miniposts” that will address the issue in question—a different facet in a different hour. The uncertain part of the experiment is precisely when I will send our daily Tuesday mailing. I look forward to your feedback.
Today we are focused on the treatment of minorities in various regions of the world. By “minorities” I do not necessarily mean specifically ethnic minorities, but also the treatment of women, children, the aged, the poor, the powerless, etc.
Minorities within a nation are particularly important because they tend to have little voice, influence or power over their own destiny. In most cases they desperately need someone else to speak up for them, to be a Voice on their behalf. That role has often come to the church. In Isaiah 1, the prophet pronounced a particularly memorable word from God in which he especially noted a key component of a righteous life was someone who stood up for the orphan and the widow (1:17, 1:23).
So throughout this Tuesday we will be looking specifically at larger trends in the treatment of minorities, and cases where the church can make a difference.
