The miracle of science

Is it healing if it isn’t miraculous?

In Matthew 10:8, Jesus told his disciples to “heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons.” While two of the four items require supernatural power, two of them can often be achieved through human scientific knowledge.

Much of our medical knowledge, in fact, has come about as a direct result of the missionary efforts of Christians. Christian-started and –run colleges and hospitals have made some of the greatest contributions.

Yet, we are sometimes tempted to think medical and humanitarian work is a lesser and perhaps even distracting part of the Great Commission. That somehow if it isn’t miraculous, it isn’t a healing. Besides, we are here to seek salvation for souls, not cures for bodies or minds.

Why can we not do both?
