Press freedom declining, censorship growing

May 17, 2011

Digital censorship is growing worldwide as media moves online, said a new report from the Committee to Protect Journalists. Digital censorship includes efforts to spy on journalists, block and disrupt the reporting process, and sabotage independent news sites. Some 69 journalists whose work appears mostly online were in prison, representing half of all reporters imprisoned worldwide. The Freedom House reports global press freedom is at its lowest level in more than a decade (Voice of America, http://bit.ly/lzFszt). Censorship and violence against journalists is fueling tensions in Tunisia (Al Jazeera). China continues to censor its Internet and television in pursuit of harmony (see next item). To enter China, Facebook might be willing to yield to censors and block content (http://bit.ly/mTyMuQ). Human Rights Watch says Thailand’s current government is “the most prolific censor in recent Thai history” (http://bit.ly/kwKyjy). This is important to Christianity because the ability to censor media also yields the ability to censor Christian messages that are produced and massively disseminated.
