The Challenges of Reaching Small Pockets

April 28, 2011

tony sheng wrote up a short little post about some of his observations on culture in Aruba while there on vacation with his wife (ooh, tough life, Tony!–grin). Several of these are quite interesting. The population of aruba is about 100,000 people. About 400 Chinese live on the island.

This is an interesting case of a “small pocket” of unreached people. Getting to them can be a bit more problematic in some ways than getting to a large group. It would be “fairly easy” to send a worker to, say, 1 million Chinese somewhere. But how difficult would it be to mobilize and send a worker to reach 400 people in a tiny island resort?

How does one reach such a small number of Chinese effectively with the Gospel? What is their life like? Is it a marginal life? Are there evangelical Catholics on the island? Is there any witness or overt outreach from the Catholic community into the Chinese?
