When sitting down for coffee may be better than handing out tracts

Seth’s Blog: Beware the Nile perch. The Nile Perch is a “bright shiny object that you can bring into your life that might just push the other useful items aside. You get hooked on them or they demand more attention or they make too much noise and the less-shiny projects or people whither away.”

Can be good (or bad, depending) if you fall in love: the price of love is losing two of your closest friends, according to new research. (Does that count when you fall in love with Jesus?)

But other examples that can be bad:

  • New tech toys (like Facebook, Twitter, etc.) which take away your time without contributing anything of value to your mission.
  • Video games (EVE Online was the bane of my existence for a long time, ’til Heidi intervened :) )
  • A new big-screen television?
  • A new job that takes you away from your vision can be a little fishy
  • A shiny evangelistic method or tool that only reaches 1% of your target population yet takes 90% of your time and doesn’t bring any multiplication
  • If an air-conditioned Starbucks moves into your town

Time management is a critical issue! Also keeping your vision clearly in view, and your goals outlined, and what your time is contributing to your goals. If your goal is to disciple people, and discipleship requires time–how much time are you pouring in to people? Sitting down for coffee may be more productive than distributing tracts, in the long run–if you are building a disciple who could one day reach far more people than you can!

Know why you do what you do!
