Roundup on the Qur’an burning

September 9, 2010

Carl Medearis: There’s a little Qur’an burning in us all. Fear is the biggest problem.

World leaders protest the planned burning: Obama, Clinton, Gates,

Religious leaders, too: Vatican, World Evangelical Alliance,

Military leaders are worried: Petraeus: Quran burning is like Abu Ghraib. Petraeus: Burning Quran Endangers Americans.

Interpol: Quran burning likely to trigger attacks. US embassies brace for Quran burning protests. Afghans stone US convoy protesting Quran burning plan.

John Robb writes about how the Koran Burning event demonstrates the superempowerment of the individual (or small group) that is possible today.

Nations strongly condemn the burning: Pakistan, Malaysia, Afghanistan, Indonesians. Iran says Israel behind Quran burning plan (but then, Iran says Israel is behind everything).

Christian persecution is likely to increase: Quran Burning Controversy Reveals Perilous Plight of Persecuted Christians Overseas.

Rackspace Shuts Down Quran-Burning Church’s Sites for violating the hate-speech provision of the acceptable-use policy.

Mission agencies decry plan: Open Doors,

A Bible Society says it will give two Qur’ans away for every Qur’an burnt.

Faith & Reason contemplates whether burning Quran a hate crime or a free speech issue?

NYC Mayor Bloomberg defends Fla. pastor right to burn Quran: “distasteful, but the minister has a right to do it.”

Fla. Church Denied Permit for Quran Burning: but they’ll probably ignore this anyway.

To me, here is the most important point. Pastor Jones tells Canadian press that if he were to get a call from the White House, State Department or Pentagon, “it would cause us to definitely think it over.” When Geoff Tunnicliffe of WEA offered to fly down and meet with him, Jones was ambivalent but said he wouldn’t turn Tunnicliffe away.

Is this about a principled stand, or attention?
